Carl Hedin: “I had a very safe childhood – every child should.”

He is one of Sweden’s most well-known equestrian profiles – but also a voice with a deep commitment to children’s right to safety. For Carl Hedin, the issue is deeply personal. Raised in a loving family where he was always free to be himself, he feels a responsibility to help more children grow up under similar conditions.

Now, he steps forward as an ambassador for ChildX, with a hope that more people will dare to see, speak up about, and take action against the sexual exploitation of children happening in Sweden today.

How have your experiences with children (e.g., through family, friends, or work) influenced your commitment to children’s rights?

I had a very safe upbringing with loving parents who always allowed me to be exactly who I was. That has inspired me to make sure other children have the same opportunities.

Is there a book, film, or song that has strengthened your engagement in children’s rights?

The first book I read was A Child Called “It”, which tells the story of a young boy growing up in an abusive home. Since then, I’ve often thought about the vulnerable situations many children find themselves in.

Working with issues around child vulnerability can be mentally challenging. What are your best tips for restoring your energy?

Getting out in nature is my favorite way to recharge. There’s something incredibly powerful about being in the forest and outdoors.
