Atilla Yoldas: “Vulnerability must be prevented and stopped.”
He has tens of thousands of young children listening, and he listens back. Atilla Yoldas is a lecturer, author and debater who refuses to accept the silence surrounding children’s vulnerability. Every encounter with a child who has told him about abuse, bullying or violence has made an impression and today he is a natural part of the fight for children’s right to safety and freedom from sexual violence.
How has your experience with children (e.g. through family, friends, work) influenced your commitment to children’s rights?
In my job as a lecturer, I meet tens of thousands of children and young people every year, and meeting them is at the heart of my commitment. I have spoken to far too many young people who testify to harassment, abuse, violence, exploitation and similar violations not to burn out. This abuse must be prevented and stopped. No child should have to be ashamed or suffer in silence because of anything from exploitation to bullying. Sexual violence must stop – and it is our responsibility as the adults in the rooms.
What is the best thing about being part of an organization like ChildX?
ChildX makes a real difference. I have full confidence in your organization and the commitment behind it. Knowing that you reach and help many children is enough for me. It is an honor to be able to link arms with you.
How do we get more people involved in the fight against sexual violence against children?
Make it personal! Underline the problems that we can access through research, studies, surveys, but also dare to be personal. Speak up when needed. Talk about personal experiences. Express your concern for children at risk. No child should suffer and there are many of us who burn when we hear about how deeply rooted the problem is.
Use those emotions. Write opinion pieces, write letters to the editor, join organizations, support ChildX, protest, demonstrate, link arms with others and put pressure on politicians. We all need to bring out the activist in us and push for real change. I believe in you!
