Nanne Grönvall: “That’s why it was a given to contribute every month”

Grooming and sexual abuse of children often happen in silence, yet have far-reaching consequences. Real change requires persistence, long-term funding, and adults who choose to act. In this interview, artist and ChildX ambassador Nanne Grönvall explains why regular giving is essential, how political advocacy can lead to changes in the law, and why persistent stereotypes about what a perpetrator “looks like” continue to undermine children’s protection.

You are not only an ambassador for ChildX but also a monthly donor. What made you take that step?

Nanne: I know how non-profit organizations are constantly struggling to get their finances together to continue running their projects and achieve their goals. Therefore, it was a given to contribute every month to ChildX, which I know makes big and important changes for vulnerable children. When you have monthly donors, it becomes easier for non-profit organizations to get a clear overview of finances and resources, even if the more spontaneous contributions are also very important.

What do you think is the most important thing that ChildX has achieved since you became involved in the organization?

Nanne: There are many things, but the fact that ChildX – together with some of us ambassadors – has reported companies and internet sites that sell child sex dolls to the police, while the organization has also had meetings with politicians with demands for legislative changes, is a clear proof that action creates impact and actual change. For once, the information about the dolls did not disappear into the mass of the daily information flow. Instead, the issue is now being reviewed with the aim of leading to a permanent legislative change.

The X symbol in ChildX’s visual identity stands for stop, visibility and collaboration. Which of the three meanings is most important to you and why?

Nanne: All three are equally important, but the goal is naturally to put a stop to all forms of grooming, sexual exploitation and trafficking of children. In this way, “stop” actually encompasses all three meanings and is most important to me.

Grooming and sexual abuse of children often take place in silence. What do you think more adults need to understand, but often miss?

Nanne: We live in a stressed society where parents find it difficult to keep up with everything, and therefore I think it is easy to miss important information about children’s vulnerability when it comes to grooming and sexual abuse. There is also still some form of naive belief – and unconscious enablers – with the attitude “yes, but he is so nice and dresses so nicely”. We must realize that perpetrators exist in all professional categories and at all levels of society. Many perpetrators succeed precisely by being socially outgoing and skilled at lying and manipulating.

What would you like to say to someone who feels that ChildX’s issues are important but has not yet taken the step to get involved as a monthly donor or in any other way?

Nanne: We often want to be involved in changing injustices in society, but the days are not always long enough for everything we want to achieve. That is precisely why the opportunity to support ChildX is so important. Through many members and monthly donors, the organization can represent us all, grow stronger and make our voices heard to politicians and in the demands for necessary legislative changes.
