Gustav Sundh: “Throughout my career, I have always fought for children’s right to play, to feel safe and to belong to the group.”
Gustav Sundh has become something of an educator when it comes to children’s right to safety in everyday life. Under the name Skolgårdsläraren, he shares reflections from his work in schools, where he has fought for more humane treatment for over two decades. With three teenage children and a deep commitment to the equal value of all, his voice is warm, clear and necessary.
How has your experience with children (e.g. through family, friends, work) influenced your commitment to children’s rights?
Throughout my career, I have always fought for children’s right to play, to feel safe and to belong to the group. Regardless of circumstances. For the past 9 years, I have run the page “Schoolyard Teacher” on social media and share short stories about approaches and treatment.
Why have you chosen to get involved in stopping the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children?
Much because I myself have 3 children in their teens and that I have worked in childcare and school for 22 years. Right now, there have been frightening alarm reports on the news about children’s vulnerability on social media. Therefore, it feels more important than ever to contribute to the fight against that evil.
Working with vulnerable children can be mentally challenging. What are your top tips for re-energizing?
Find something creative you are passionate about doing in your spare time, something where the process is much more important than the goal. Music, painting, anything! I’ve been (and still am) skateboarding for 35 years!
