We monitor the EU elections

No one is in favor of total surveillance of all private online communications, but we ARE in favor of putting in place legislation that protects children from sexual violence on and via the internet.

Last year, the European Commission proposed legislation to protect children from sexual violence online. Instead of focusing on how best to protect children, the debate has almost exclusively focused on how the legislation affects the privacy of internet users.

There is a balance to be struck between children’s right to protection from abuse and the privacy of other users, but in the debate we must not forget about children and children’s right to protection – something that almost no one has talked about.

Several candidates say they are in favor of the bill in some surveys, but in other surveys they say they are not in favor.
– How will your candidate ensure that the balance provides sufficient protection for children?

Swedish Women’s Organizations has asked the EU candidates about their position on the bill in general.

See the responses in full in the Gender Equality Barometer here.

Keeping children safe online must be a priority – and we must do it now. Every second counts.
