FAQ – Here we have collected information about the Grooming Generator
What is grooming?
Grooming is a serious crime where an adult seeks contact with a child with the aim of exploiting them. It often takes place online – through games, social media or chat apps – and is based on manipulation. The perpetrator may pretend to be the same age as the child or use multiple false identities to build trust and influence the child. Grooming can be done slowly by building rapport and trust, or quickly through flattery, pressure and threats – sometimes in the first contact. Read more about grooming here.
What is the Grooming Generator?
The Grooming Generator is a digital tool created by ChildX, with technical support from Tele2, that allows adults to experience how a grooming conversation unfolds, to increase understanding of how children are manipulated online.
How does the Grooming Generator work?
Participants receive messages via text message over three days, with interactions similar to real-life grooming processes. Afterwards, participants receive parenting tips and information on how to talk to their children in a safe and informed way, if they wish. The text message is sent from our number 072 642 29 87, and cannot be replied to.
Why is the campaign important?
Many adults have little understanding of how grooming works and how quickly it can happen. The average time to groom a child in an online gaming environment is just 45 minutes – about the same time as a TV episode or a football half. The campaign aims to raise awareness across the board and give parents the tools to stay safe online for and with their children.
What is the objective of the Grooming Generator?
The initiative aims to:
- Increase adults’ knowledge about grooming and how it happens.
- Provide parents with concrete tools to talk to their children about online safety.
- Build public opinion and influence decision-makers to take grooming more seriously.
Who can participate in the campaign?
All adults who want to understand grooming and raise awareness of the problem. The campaign is particularly aimed at parents, policy makers and community leaders who can influence legislation and protection measures.
How can you participate?
By signing up to the Grooming Generator and spreading the word in their networks. The campaign also encourages participants to challenge other adults to go through the experience, and get involved in children’s digital lives.
Who is working on the campaign?
ChildX is leading the campaign together with Tele2, and part of the initiative is done together with ECPAT and the Prince Couple’s Foundation.
How can I protect my child from grooming?
The campaign offers a knowledge bank and concrete parenting tips, for example
- Keep an open dialog with your child about their digital life.
- Teach children to be critical of people they meet online.
- Set clear limits and use security settings on apps and games.
- Encourage the child to tell you if something feels uncomfortable.
